A/C Powered Clippers:
- The oldest style electric hair clippers plugged directly in to an electrical outlet and are still a common type of clipper today. A/C powered clippers are generally less expensive than rechargeable battery powered clippers. They are also lighter. A/C powered clippers are good for situations when the area where hair will be cut has a conveniently located A/C power outlet. A/C powered clippers have very few components and usually last a very long time
Rechargeable Battery Powered Clippers:
- Rechargeable battery powered clippers are similar to A/C powered clippers. The difference is that the clipper motor is powered by a rechargeable battery that is charged via an A/C plug. The advantage of a battery powered clipper is the lack of a cord. Hair can be cut in areas without an electrical outlet and the power cord doesn’t get in the way of hair styling. Rechargeable batteries tend to lose their ability to hold a charge over time, and thus the lifespan of rechargeable clippers is less than A/C powered clippers
Clipper Guides & Other Accessories:
- Clipper guides are plastic or metal parts that clip or slide on to the clipper to limit the depth of a cut. For example, a 2mm guide placed on a pair of clippers would mean the shortest that the clippers would cut the hair is 2mm. Likewise, a 6mm guide would limit the cut to 6mm. Most clippers require a drop or two of machine oil on the blades every now and then. Most clippers come with a small bottle of machine oil. In some cases, clippers will also come with a brush to help keep the cutting blades clean
